As a life-long resident of Southern California, increasing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education has been a major priority of mine. Enhancing STEM education in our local schools is critically important if California is to remain the innovation capital of the world. It is our duty to empower young people to succeed as adults.
In a world where our economy is becoming more technology-based every day, we must ensure that our students receive a top-notch education that stresses STEM subjects, including computer science, so that they are prepared to enter these fields. That is why I have been proud to support programs like the Congressional App Challenge right here in our local schools.
The Congressional App Challenge is an annual, nationwide competition hosted by Members of Congress in their districts encouraging students grades K-12 to learn how to code. In 2016, I was the co-chairman of the App Challenge which had 50 different student teams participate from just the 39th Congressional District!
I recently had the opportunity to visit Fullerton School District and Los Altos High School to promote the Congressional App Challenge, which Los Altos students have won two years in a row! I was grateful to learn from these students about how their hands-on, interactive classes are preparing them not just to succeed, but to thrive in our local communities. If given the right tools and resources, there are no limits to what our students in STEM fields can accomplish.
