Ed Royce (R-CA-39) met with Principal James Elsasser, teachers, and other representatives from Los Alamitos' Oak Middle School today to congratulate them for being selected as a 2001-2002 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. As only one of 172 public and private secondary schools in the country to receive the award, the representatives from Oak Middle School are in Washington, DC this week to participate in a two-day conference with U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige in honor of their Blue Ribbon award selection.

Calling it a win for students, parents and teachers, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA-39) praised President Bush for today's announcement of the $132.9 million "Reading First" grant for California. This grant will help teachers and administrators across California implement effective practices for classroom reading instruction. Instruction will be based on scientific evidence of how children learn to read.
