Rep. Royce Opposes Another Amnesty Attempt

Today, Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) issued the following statement in opposition to the Democrat Leadership’s efforts to pass amnesty legislation known as the DREAM Act:

"Under this bill, any illegal immigrant may apply to stay in this country. DHS may not remove any alien who has a pending application. This status is valid for 5 years, and can be extended by DHS for another 5 years. All the while the applicant is allowed to work in the U.S. and travel outside the U.S.

"With every amnesty, we have had a problem with massive fraud. About one-fourth of those legalized under the 1986 law received amnesty fraudulently.

"As one former U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service employee told me ‘the system we have now can't handle the workload.’ There is a backlog, with some people having to wait 3 years to get their cases decided.

"What do you think is going to happen when we have millions of new cases on top of what the USCIS has currently? Do you think it is going to be able to take the time to do proper background checks and investigations? I don't. It can't even do that now.

"In fact, the Government Accountability Office has said this as well. It found that ‘production goals’ are put over rooting out fraud. While I applaud the requirement in the bill for background checks and increased fraud penalties, I question why there is no funding for additional personnel to handle the increase in the number of cases."
